The UK has a rising number of older, experienced drivers on its roads. Older drivers bring a wealth of knowledge and tolerance to their driving; however with today’s constantly rising volume of traffic and complex modern road systems the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) recognise the inevitable effects of ageing can affect driving.
DSA launched Arrive Alive Classic as part of the government’s road safety strategy in Spring 2003 to provide a programme of presentations specifically for drivers aged 50 plus, focusing mostly on the retired age group.
Arrive Alive Classic is the sixth of the six presentation modules that the Arrive Alive road safety programme can offer interested organisations and official bodies.
Based on the successful award winning Arrive Alive scheme, which promotes safe driving to new drivers, the primary aim of this presentation is to encourage road safety by highlighting awareness of issues which are relevant to the more mature driver, such as:
Information regarding recent changes to legislation and the Highway Code will be provided. The presentation will also provide general tips and reminders regarding general good driving practice, something that is appropriate to drivers of all ages.
The presentation is free of charge and will be conducted by an experienced, current, DSA driving examiner. It lasts approximately one hour. This will include a short DVD, which both illustrates and provides advice on driving in today’s road and traffic conditions.
There will also be an opportunity for questions and discussion of the issues raised.
The aim is to help the more mature driver to continue to drive more safely, therefore retaining their driving licence into later life.
DSA is keen to reach a wide cross section of the aged 50 plus community. If you know of, or are a member of a group or association for the over 50s, and would like to book a presentation please contact the DSA by either sending an e-mail to arrive.alive@dsa.gsi.gov.uk
or by telephoning 0300 200 1122 (option 2 then 5).
