Computerisation of the MOT scheme

The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) use a computerised system for the administration of the MOT scheme. It can give you up-to-date information about an MOT test and the MOT history of a vehicle.

How to check the MOT status of a vehicle

You can check the MOT of any vehicle that you own, or if you are thinking of buying a second hand vehicle. You’ll need the registration number and either one of the following:

  • the test number from the MOT test certificate
  • the document reference number from the registration certificate (V5C)

You can find out about information such as the:

  • make and model of the vehicle
  • colour of the vehicle
  • MOT status
  • expiry date of the valid MOT

You’ll also get the vehicle's mileage, recorded at the time of the MOT test, when you make your enquiry.

Checking the MOT history of a vehicle

The MOT history gives you full test details for all the tests that have been done on a vehicle since the system was computerised. You can also find out about any recommended repairs, which needed to be done on the vehicle, noted at the time of the MOT test. The mileage is also available as part of the service.

You can check the MOT history of a vehicle by phoning VOSA on 0906 120 9 941. Calls should last no longer than two minutes and cost £1.50 per minute from a BT landline. Calls from mobiles and other networks may vary.

Checking an MOT history can also help you decide on whether you should buy a vehicle.
