When you get in touch with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), it will save you time and effort if you know who to contact. If they write to you, you should usually reply to whoever sent you the letter. If you have a more general enquiry, here are some ways of finding the right contact.
HMRC is the new department responsible for the business of the former Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise. It has a number of different contact points depending upon what your query is about.
If you have problems or need further help when using an online service, contact one of the specialist help desks.
HMRC has a range of specialist helplines.
Some of the main helplines are:
| Helpline for | Number | Opening hours |
|---|---|---|
| Child Benefit | 0845 302 1444 (0845 603 2000 in Northern Ireland) |
8.00 am to 8.00 pm seven days a week |
| National Insurance Contributions Office | 0845 302 1479 | 8.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday |
| Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit | 0845 300 3900 | 8.00 am to 8.00 pm seven days a week |
| Self Assessment | 0845 900 0444 | 8.00 am to 8.00 pm seven days a week |
| Customs duties, excise and VAT | 0845 010 9000 | 8.00 am to 8.00 pm Monday to Friday |
If you need to see someone in person - for example if you have special needs or if one of our helplines hasn't been able to resolve your enquiry, you can visit your local HMRC Enquiry Centre. Look in your phone book under 'HM Revenue & Customs' (or 'Inland Revenue' if it's an old phone book) or find contact details online.
Most Centres are open to the public from Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm, and some are also open outside these hours.
If you need to discuss your own personal tax affairs you should usually contact your Tax Office.
If HMRC have sent you a tax return, the address and phone number of your Tax Office will be printed on the front page of your tax return or on your Statements of Account. You can also find contact details using HMRC's online A-Z search or (if you don't know your Tax Office) through an HMRC Enquiry Centre.
If you're an employee, or you get a pension from when you worked, contact your employer's Tax Office. Ask your employer (or whoever deals with the payroll) for contact details, or look on a tax document like your P60. If you can't find the telephone number, you can use the Tax Office locator.
HMRC publishes many plain English leaflets designed to answer the most common tax and customs questions. You can download most of these right away from the HMRC website - along with many commonly used claim forms and most of the full tax return pages and help notes.
If you need multiple copies of forms or don't have access to a printer you can order them online and ask for them to be posted to you.
Call the Taxback Helpline on 0845 077 6543 (open 8 am to 10 pm seven days a week) or contact the Tax Office dealing with repayments for your area.
